Alaska Cruise Tour 2015 – Juneau and Skagway 6.18.15

We arrived in Juneau and had no excursions planned.  We took a city tour which also included a ride to Mendenhall Glacier.  Mendenhall Glacier is always very beautiful and we had another great day with beautiful blue skies and great temps in the AM of 55 and 70’s by mid-afternoon.  After taking several pictures of the glacier and walking over to Nugget Falls to view the waterfall we decided to take a 3 mile hike on the east side of the glacier.  We had taken a shorter hike on a previous trip and knew it had many nice overlooks to see the glacier and the surrounding area.   After getting our exercise for the day we spent the rest of the day walking around town visiting such sites as the Red Dog Saloon and many local shops to visit.  After we departed, we spent the evening before dinner watching spectacular views down the channel while enjoying cocktails in the concierge lounge.  We have done this on most of our departures because it is so nice just to watch the beautiful scenery.   In Alaska the sunset does not occur until about 10-11pm.

Our next stop was Skagway where we had a dogsled ride and a visit to Musher’s Camp  (http://skagwayshoretours.com/tour/sled-dog-adventure/).  We were taken on a historical tour of the city and a stunning coastal drive.  Once we arrive in Dyea we hopped into a custom-designed, wheeled summertime sled, where the young huskies greeted us.  These huskies pulled us along zigzagging mile long trail through the worlds’ second largest rainforest.   It was interesting to learn that these trips provide the huskies with the exercise to build their muscles for the big sport dog sled race (Iditarod) which is the most popular sport race in Alaska that is held in March each year.  It was amazing to see how excitable the dogs were to see people and anxious to begin their trail run.  Some of the lead dogs were very smart while some of the other dogs weren’t very smart but were used primarily as muscle to pull the sleds along.   At the end of the tour we learned more about the sport of mushing and of course a visit with the very loveable and adorable puppies.  It was amazing on how well tempered all of these dogs were (both young and old).  After our tour we went into town and enjoyed shopping and tried the local “fried Alaska bread” (fried dough with cinnamon sugar) delicious!

Tomorrow we head to Hubbard Glacier for some very scenic cruising of the glacier and icebergs.

Hope you enjoy our blogs!

Alaska Cruise Tour 2015 – Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point 6.17.15

We arrived in Ketchikan after a nice sea day in the Inside Passage where we were able to view some of the magnificent scenery.  We had arranged for a salmon fishing trip off the ship for the morning.  Unfortunately it was an unsuccessful fishing trip with hardly a bite.  The boat ride was enjoyable though and we did see many bald eagles flying around the waters where we fished.  We even saw a whale or two as we searched in vain for salmon.  On our return from the fishing trip we did a little shopping around the area before boarding our ship.

Our next stop was Icy Strait Point, a port we had not visited before.  We had arranged for a private whale watching http://www.icystraitwhaleadventures.com tour which turned out to be fantastic.  There were only 10 people on our tour on a rather large boat which made for easy viewing of the many whales we saw.  There was a pod of 4 whales we watched for 20-30 minutes that just slowly swam around and occasionally did some shallow dives.  We then went out a little further and found one very energetic whale that breached for us several times and kept slapping his pectoral fin against the water playfully.  Sharon got some great pictures of these whales!  We also saw many sea lions along the way and some very cute sea otters.  This was really a great trip and was so much better than the whale watching offered from the cruise ship which charged $25 more for a ½ hour shorter trip on a boat crammed with 150 people trying to get a glimpse of the whales.  After our whale watching excursion we had delicious halibut fish and chips at a local restaurant.  We did a little nature hike after our snack and watched the zip liners come down the over 1 mile cable on this small island.  We were really pleasantly surprised with this port stop and hope we go back again.

Our next stop is Juneau where we will visit Mendenhall Glacier, hiking and then to Skagway for a dog sledding excursion.

Hope you enjoy our blogs!

Alaska CruiseTour 2015 – Seattle and Vancouver 6.13.15

We headed off on our Alaska CruiseTour on June 11th with a short overnight stay in Seattle.  We had an enjoyable day visiting Pike’s Fresh Market and walking the nearby streets sampling many of the tasty treats.  We strolled by the original Starbucks that started a billion dollar corporation.  On June 12th we took our rental car up to Vancouver to board our 7 day cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas.  We were able to spend a few hours walking around the City Centre and along the boardwalk.  It is a truly beautiful city and so well kept up compared to many large cities.

We are now off on our 7 day cruise where we will visit Ketchikan, Skagway, Juneau and Icy Strait Point before making our way to Anchorage.  Once in Anchorage we will head out on a 4 day land tour with Royal Caribbean visiting Denali Park, Talkeetna and Alyeska (which we have never been to).  After our Royal Caribbean land tour we have made some private arrangements to rent a car and drive down to Homer Alaska to do an exciting bear watching tour where they take you by plane to see the bears up close and personal.  We also have a full day fishing trip chartered while we are in Homer.  Besides these tours we have scheduled in Homer we have several other exciting excursions planned for some of our other stops on our cruise such as a salmon fishing in Ketchikan, whale watching in Icy Straits and dog sledding in Skagway.  We will be sharing our photos and experiences with you as we revisit Alaska for our 3rd time.

Our next stop is Ketchikan - Salmon fishing!

Hope you enjoy our blogs!
